National Endometriosis Awareness Month

March 3, 2025

March is National Endometriosis Awareness Month! Endometriosis is a condition that affects more than 11% of women ages 15 to 44 in the United States. It is one of the most common gynecological diseases and occurs when tissue similar to the inner lining of the uterus grows outside of it. The most common symptom of endometriosis is severe pelvic pain, especially during menstrual periods.

Other symptoms include:

  • Pain during sex or when using the bathroom
  • Heavy bleeding between or during periods
  • Trouble getting pregnant
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Anxiety

Some people may not experience any symptoms and symptoms may disappear after menopause, but not always.

Endometriosis is a chronic disease that can result in the formation of scar tissue, such as adhesions or fibroses, in the pelvis.

While endometriosis cannot be prevented, increased awareness of the disease and early detection can help reduce or stop the impacts of the disease. If you suspect you have endometriosis, consult with your primary care physician or OBGYN. Having a careful history of your menstrual symptoms and other symptoms you may be experiencing can greatly help your provider determine your diagnosis and give you the necessary treatment.
